Over 140 years of trading

Established in 1882, Abbott’s is a family-run business offering supply and installation of blinds, curtains and flooring.

About

Abbotts Interiors is London’s leading independent flooring and window dressing retailer for both private and commercial customers.

The shop includes a large showroom over two floors, displaying an extensive range of brands and styles of flooring and interior designs.

Abbotts Interiors has been in the same family since grandfather Charles Abbott established the store in 1882. The business was passed on to Charles’ children George and Phil, and their sisters Lynette and Daphne. Nowadays Phil’s sons Ben and Josh lead the company, though all the family still have active roles within the organisation.

A team of flooring and window dressing experts are available on site to share their vast knowledge of soft and hard furnishings from flooring to blinds, and can offer advice on both residential and commercial projects.

Abbotts Interiors works across the UK, but has also taken on projects across Europe, including Ibiza and Latvia.

Over the years, the store has adapted to new styles and trends, expanding the focus from carpets to wooden flooring and Lino, as well as blinds, curtains and soft furnishings

A dedicated fitting team can offer a complete onsite measuring and estimating service for all types of floor coverings and window dressings.

Our team

Tommy Mila

Tommy is one of the most recent additions to the Abbotts team. You'll find him at the front desk at the Roman Road showroom and he'll happy to answer your questions about flooring. Originally from Cambridge (though a New Zealander by heritage), Tommy first started in flooring as a fitter and has even installed carpets at Kings College Cambridge. Tommy came to Bow when given an opportunity to work at Abbotts and is now a proud local resident of Bow.

Barbara Chater

Barbara is the one who keeps all the books up to date. Naturally, she’s great with numbers and has a surgical eye for detail. Working alongside the accounts manager, she’s across all areas of the business, including flooring and blinds and curtains. Barabara is a popular member of the team. She loves to crack a joke and make her colleagues laugh. When she’s not at Abbotts, Barbara loves going for afternoon teas with her friends.

Mark Abbott

Mark is the warehouse manager – he oversees stock levels and logistics. Another member of the Abbott family, he’s got over 40 years’ experience in the flooring trade. During that time, he’s adapted to changes in processes and technology, ensuring the seamless flow of goods to and from the warehouse. When Mark isn’t running the warehouse, he likes to get out on his motorbike. He also enjoys building and piloting model aeroplanes.

Adam Wiltshire

Adam is out on the road and covers estimating and installations. He works across all projects, including the more technical and increasingly more popular motorisation and smarthome controls. Adam’s background is in accountancy, and that’s given him a great eye for detail, which is a key attribute in estimating and fitting. He's fully trained in all our products, including awnings, blinds, curtains and shutters. When not at work, Adam likes to spend time with his family, and support his team, West Ham United.

Jack Wilkie

Jack joined Abbott’s in 2021 and he quickly became an integral part of the blinds and curtains team. He takes an incredibly calm approach to his work, which is why he’s a proficient problem solver. He also stays ahead of the project schedule, anticipating any issues or delays before they occur. When not working on projects at Abbott’s, Jack likes to relax with friends and family. He also likes to travel, taking trips to the coast with his partner.

Amelia Solidoro

Amelia represents the Italian arm of the Abbott’s extended family. She has an incrediable product knowledge and can advise you on all the latest styles and trends. Her attention to detail is a key attribute in making her a great office manager. She keeps a sharp eye on the delivery schedule and the diary, in general – Amelia is the reason why the order process runs so seamlessly. When not at Abbotts, Amelia likes to keep fit and healthy with sports such as boxing.

Gary Beale

Gary manages the showroom team. He’s got over four decades of experience in the business and his attention to detail, especially with new products, is second to none. Furthermore, Gary’s got an extensive, near-encyclopedic knowledge of installation techniques – if he doesn’t know it, that’s because it’s not worth knowing. Gary’s worked on projects nationwide, but when he’s not on the job, he’s a keen fisherman and gardener. But most of all, he loves spending time with his family.

Matt D’Urso

Matt’s role is sales, primarily, but he’s also responsible for running the fittings and estimator diaries. Based in the showroom, Matt has gained an in-depth knowledge of everything the company does. He’s worked in numerous departments over the years, including the warehouse. However, Matt’s talents are best applied to sales and working face-to-face with customers. When he’s not selling flooring, he’s spending time with his family or catching up on his favourite soaps.

Will Ost

Will has over a decade experience of interior and exterior shading solutions and manages the installations and estimations. Will is able to apply his knowledge from his background as an electrician to motorised blinds, curtains and awnings. Will possesses a keen technical brain and he’s got a sharp eye for detail. Will has worked on projects all over the UK and mainland Europe. When not applying his trade for Abbott’s or with his wife and 2 boys, you’ll find Will on the banks of a lake, fishing for carp.

George Abbott

George is the Managing Director of Abbott’s Interiors, and he’s been part of the business in some shape or form for over six decades. George has been involved in every aspect of the business and now takes a back seat and watches his nephews Ben and Josh take Abbotts into the future. And when he’s not doing all of that, George likes to swap Bow for the slightly sunnier climes of the South of France.

Phillip Abbott

Phil is one of the 4th generation Abbott quartet. Although now semi-retired he’s always been involved in the family enterprise. Phil is known for being a positive, personable and very popular face around the business. When he’s not at Abbott’s, Phil can be seen out cycling, where he’s known to clock up over 100 miles a week. And when he’s not in the saddle, Phil loves to spend time with his four grandchildren.

Lynette Gyford

Lynette is as much a part of the flooring dynasty as her brothers George and Phil, only she went in a different direction and took up accounting. She has a surgical eye for detail and a razor-sharp wit – everyone agrees that Lynette is great fun to be around. Based in the Bow office, Lynette loves looking after her grandchildren when she’s not at work crunching the numbers. She’s also a master patchwork quilt maker.

Josh Abbott

Josh is a fifth-generation Abbott and built up over a decade of experience in blinds, curtains, shutters and exterior shading. Josh's product knowledge is second to none and he’s always on the lookout for new products and trends. Josh has worked on projects of all sizes nationwide and some spectacular homes in Europe. Josh lives an active lifestyle and loves trail running. Also a family man, he values the time spent with his wife and two children the most.

Ben Abbott

Ben is a fifth-generation member of the Abbott family, with over two decades of experience in the business. Ben is the future of Abbotts and has led the way in maintaining awareness of new product ranges and emerging trends in interior design. He’s worked on a wide range of projects across the UK and Europe. When he’s not working, Ben is a family man. He enjoys spending time with his wife and two kids, and he’s also a keen skier.

Our History

1882

Charles Abbott took over the shop on Roman Road and registered it under his name as C. Abbott Limited. The shop started from humble beginnings selling kitchen lino and even mops.

1930s

The business was passed on to Charles Abbott Senior nephew, also a Charles Abbott Junior.

1960

Following Charles Abbott’s death in 1960, the business was carried on by nephews George Abbott Snr (who ran the wholesale side of the basis) and Ernest (Ernie ran one of five branches in the area selling rugs and hardware).  Over the years several other shops were opened.

George Jnr also started working for the business when he was 15 in 1958. It was his idea to buy the adjacent shops on the terrace that had come up for sale when the landlady had died.

1970s

Purchased the whole terrace in which the old store once stood with Milsons on the corner (selling seeds on corner). At that time Abbotts was just one small shop in the terrace, with a passageway at the back connecting all the shops (and where children used to play!).

1973

Abbotts ran a wholesale division in Stratford that has since been sold.

1972

Ernest retired (died 84). George Snr (died 1988).

1975

The terrace was demolished to make way for the construction of the building we see today at 470-480 Roman Road.

1980s

Closed down the other branches in Bethnal Green (opposite Tescos) and two more in Roman Road (one on Parnell Road corner south side, one near where Zealand Cafe is now).

2001

Ben Abbott joins the company

2003

Expanded product range to include window dressings. Abbotts is now one of the biggest independent suppliers of Luxaflex blinds in the UK.

2009

Josh Abbott joins the company

2015

Moved the warehouse to Woodfood and expanded the commercial side of the business, that now covers the whole of London collaborating with interior designers and architects.

2017

Abbotts won the Luxaflex Independent Retailer of the Year.
